Dr. Bruce Watson, New Prairie High School Ladies’ Varsity Golf Coach, accompanied super sophomores Liv Trojanowksi and Cyd Palmer to the Wed. practice round of the United States Senior Golf Open at Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame where Cyd volunteered to serve as standard bearer for three days of the Senior Men’s Professional Golf Association event.
Coach, Liv and Cyd toured the course with professionals, Ben Bates, Joe Durant, Ken Duke and Frenchman Tom Levet. The three learned many valuable lessons about the skills and discipline it takes to become a professional golfer, plus some interesting stories about Tom Levet’s childhood in France.
In the initial round of play, Cyd carried the standard for professionals Jerry Kelly, Joe Durant and Paul Goydos. In a display of long-ball power and accurate approach shots, Goydos and Durant each shot 3 under par while Kelly shot 6 under par and was currently in third place in a field of 156 professional and amateur senior golfers (over 50 years of age).
At the end of the warm, humid day, Cyd was still excited about the round and the professionals whom she observed. “They hit their shots so accurately and putted so well that it was amazing to watch” Palmer stated. “And they each gave me the balls they used on the final hole while Kelly give me his autographed glove that he wore for the round”.
Cyd also served as standard bearer for the final round on Sunday.
